It’s time for the second in our series of blog articles looking at new products in our range. As we outlined previously, with 20 years of experience and passion about play, here at Playsmart UK, we are always looking out for new innovations that sees a step change improvement to what was previously seen as ‘the norm’. Last month we told you about ‘Corkeen’, this month we are going to talk to you about Nordic Lawn.
Where we went to Portugal to find Corkeen, it will come as little surprise to you with a name like ‘Nordic Lawn’, that this time we ended up in Scandinavia. A beautiful part of the world, with wonderful hospitable people, where you find very long days in summer and equally very short days in winter, not to mention large swings in temperature. It is perhaps of little surprise then for us to encounter ground breaking, innovative and creative grass growing solutions coming from this part of the world?
Nordic Lawn specialise in providing ‘hybrid grass’ solutions. Hybrid grass is where natural grass is reinforced with synthetic fibres. General wear, high usage and of course, bad weather, wet soil and high amounts of shade or poor light will all cause poor growing conditions for grass. While some of you may like to go for a 100% synthetic, zero maintenance solution, a hybrid solution does provide a halfway house option.
Using a hybrid grass solution can invariably help the natural grass problems above disappear, provide greener lawns and no bare patches, while still producing a natural finish with less maintenance. It is easy to install and is incredibly durable.
So how does it work then? Using the example of Nordic Lawn’s ‘Green Hybrid’ solution consists of the same material as artificial grass – they are made of PolyEthylene – but just in lower densities and quantities. They are knitted together in a honeycomb structure – as shown on the diagram – allowing the natural grass to grow through.

To give you a feel for the impact of Green Hybrid grass, it requires no prior construction work and is easy to install with low maintenance after it has been put in.
And while Green Hybrid may have a wide range of potential uses and deployments (from public parks to private gardens or back yards), there is a very specific play surfacing solution now available also from Nordic Lawn designed to specifically complement the Green Hybrid grass product in playground locations: they have released a Fall Protection Pad.
This 30mm pad can be laid underneath the Green Hybrid honeycomb structure allowing the grass to grow through and give an entirely green finish, while also being able to offer a Critical Fall Height of 2.7m. It conforms to EN1177:2018 and EN1176:2017 and still offers optimal drainage.
